There’ll be sad songs… a list of sad, sad songs

The title of this post references a 1986 song by Billy Ocean that is, in reality, not all that sad (or good, for that matter). However, at the behest of College Pastor, and also to establish a trend here (Tuesdays just may be the day for lists), today’s post is a list of Sad, Sad, No Really, Seriously, Painfully Depressing, Sad Songs (go ahead and grab a tissue and a beer); or to quote College Pastor, “cryin’, sad, seal the windows and turn on the gas songs.” So again, with very little thought and one sweep through my iTunes catalog, here’s what I came up with (here is the playlist on Spotify):*

He Stopped Loving Her Today, George Jones
22, Richard Buckner
No Need to Argue, Cranberries
Whiskey Lullaby, Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss
I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, Hank Williams (there are easily ten other Hank songs that would fit here. I find this to be one of the saddest, however)
Everybody Hurts, R.E.M.
When I Call Your Name, Vince Gill
Send in the Clowns, Sondheim (from A Little Night Music)
Tears in Heaven, Eric Clapton
Love Hurts, Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris (apparently Nazareth originally did this song)
It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday and/or End of the Road (arguably different versions the same song), Boyz II Men

I’m pretty sure “He Stopped Loving Her Today” is easily the winner when it comes to sad songs, but can you think of others?

*Here is last week’s list and here is the drinking songs playlist on Spotify.
